Studying abroad can be a new and exciting experience but a bit intimidating at first. This is why homestay were introduced.

A homestay provides an opportunity for you to stay with a local family in the United States or Canada while you are working on your education. You get the chance to learn how the locals live and gain knowledge about the surrounding areas.  You also are able to develop relationships and memories with your host family that will last a lifetime!  Your hosts can help you to visit local attractions, introduce you to the community, help provide you with things to do and introduce western food and other necessities for you. Perhaps the most important benefit of all is the fact that you know you will be safe and taken care of when you choose the homestay option with ESLI!

5 Benefits of Homestays:

  1. Meeting local people: Not only do you get to meet local people, but you get to live with them. This helps you branch out and feel more comfortable when in a new setting.  The more comfortable you are, the more successful you will be as a student!
  2. Moving to a new location: It can be scary to move to a new place all by yourself in an unfamiliar setting. Homestays provide security and confidence because you get to learn about the new surroundings of the family you stay with.
  3. Trying new foods: You will get an insight into what people in the area eat! Not only do you get to try new foods but you may end up loving a few.
  4. Improving your language skills: You get a chance to work on your language skills by speaking to your hosts. This helps you build your language ability in a friendly and comfortable environment, even when you aren’t in school!
  5. Learn the local cultures: When staying in a homestay you experience first-hand what it is like to live like an American/Canadian. You experience the day to day activities of the locals and even experience some of the holidays and events with your host family.

ESLI has homestay opportunities at both the University of Minnesota Duluth and Trinity Western University with plans to expand homestay options in all of the ESLI schools.

Homestays are a great option when studying abroad, so don’t miss out on your chance to stay with a local family in the U.S. or in Canada when studying with ESLI.
