Getting Ready for Summer Weather

If you’re like me, cold and snowy weather mean I don’t get outside much, and I definitely don’t get enough exercise!  Winter is time for yummy hot chocolate and good food, but we all feel it when it’s time to put on a bathing suit again.



So what can you do to help take care of extra winter weight—and wake up your mind for the end of the semester and the dreaded final exams? Check out your campus’s fitness center, of course!  Most university fitness centers are full of great ways to get in shape, meet new friends, and conquer stress  Here are just a couple of the fitness centers at our partner universities—and they’re all available to ESLI students!

The Fitness Studio at Trinity Western University in Vancouver, Canada, offers group fitness classes in Zumba, yoga, kick-boxing, dance, Pilates, and much more! You can find your own personal trainer at the Enarson Gymnasium—and make a new friend, too, because the trainers are also students at TWU!  If you want to do personal training in a group, that’s available too. Visit the Recreation Programs website for all the options at TWU, including a rock climbing wall!

If you’re at SIUE and love to swim, Aquatics are for you.  You can swim in one of the 6 lanes, use the diving board, or take part in one of the aquatics programs and classes, like these a swim stroke clinic, aqua Zumba, log-rolling, or even reserve the pool for parties or private group swim lessons!  If you would rather get outside and ride a bike, check out SIUE’s Bike Share Program and ride one of the many on-campus biking trails. Head to the Student Fitness Center Equipment Issue counter when the snow is gone to check out a bike!

ESLI at WTAMU students in Canyon, TX, have still other options for fun and fitness. The suspended track inside the All-Purpose Room offers the perfect place to walk or run when it’s too hot to do this outside, and a recreational pool that offers more than just swimming: there is a lazy river and a vortex pool, too!

If you want more of a challenge, WTAMU also has a climbing tower fashioned after a real rock feature in Palo Duro Canyon! There are climbing paths for new climbers and for experienced ones, and they provide all the equipment you need, including harnesses, climbing, shoes, ropes and more. The activity center also offers one-on-one tutoring and belay clinics with their friendly staff.

As you can see, our campuses offer a lot of different options for getting in shape and beating student stress!  Check out the fitness offerings on YOUR campus today, and set some goals for yourself that will make you feel better, think better, and look great!  Just remember to always follow the rules and stay safe.
